How much does a kitchen remodel cost in New Bern, NC?

Why they differ. Cost vs. Value prices a fixed, defined project at contractor rates, so it runs high and does not reflect owners who cut scope. Angi averages jobs booked by pros on its platform, a mix of large and small. Houzz surveys homeowners on what they actually spent, and medians are less affected by a few very expensive kitchens. The current Cost vs. Value edition is 2025, so check for a newer one each fall.

- Age of the house. Old wiring, galvanized pipe, uneven floors and walls that are out of square take extra labor. Lead-safe work on pre-1978 paint adds cost as well.
- Moisture repairs. Damp subfloors or framing under a sink or over a crawl space need fixing before new cabinets go in.
- Moving things. Each move of a sink, range or gas line adds trades and usually a permit.
- Review and permits. Historic review for exterior work, owners association approval and zoning add fees and, more importantly, time.

Resale. In the 2025 Cost vs. Value report, a midrange minor kitchen remodel recouped 113 percent of its cost, and a midrange major remodel recouped 51 percent. Those are national averages, not promises. If you plan to live in the kitchen for 20 years, your own comfort is the better return.
Reserves. Keep 10 percent of the budget aside in a newer home and 15 to 20 percent in an older one. If it goes unspent, you can upgrade the lighting at the end.
A $40,000 line. North Carolina requires a licensed general contractor for projects of $40,000 or more, and building permit exemptions also stop at $40,000. If your project is near that figure, ask how it affects the paperwork. Look up licenses with the state board.
Comparing prices. Ask each remodeler for a written breakdown that names the cabinet line, counter material, appliance allowance and who pulls the permits. A low total can simply mean a smaller scope.
